Spring has Arrived

Spring has arrived and with it, warmer temperatures and sunlight! A lot of people don’t know that sunscreen should be worn every day, no matter the weather or temperature, but especially during the months where you’ll be outside or have more sun exposure. It’s a common misconception for people to think they can skip this step because they wear a foundation that contains SPF or claim they don’t need it because they’re rarely exposed to the sun. While it’s great that beauty brands have started formulating sun protection into their products, this really isn’t enough to make a difference. Also, even if you don’t frequently lay out by the pool or spend time outdoors, you’re still exposed to the sun as UV rays are present year-round. UVA rays, the same kind of rays found in tanning booths, can penetrate through clouds and windows regardless of weather conditions. Did you know that we get the most sun in the car while driving? So, unless the windows in your car and home have top-notch UV protection, your skin is being affected!

In our last blog post, I touched on the difference between medical-grade and over-the-counter products. As a refresher, medical-grade products can penetrate the skin more effectively than over-the-counter products, giving better results. Taking preventative action is vital when it comes to improving skin health which is why using medical-grade sunscreen is so important! We see terms like “broad spectrum”, “physical”, and “chemical” sunscreens but what do these terms mean? Let’s clear up some of the confusion: SPF in over-the-counter products blocks UVB rays (which are most intense on sunny days and during the summer months), but does virtually nothing to protect against the UVA rays I mentioned above. UVA rays can lead to melanomas and break down our dermal layer, resulting in loss of collagen and skin elasticity, not to mention lead to rough skin texture and broken capillaries. If sunscreen is “broad spectrum”, then that means it protects against both UVA and UVB rays so the chances of getting a sunburn or skin cancer are drastically reduced. Physical sunscreens create a barrier on the skin and reflect the sun’s UV rays, while chemical sunscreens absorb UV rays, convert the rays into heat, and then release them from the body. Your skin type will determine whether a physical or chemical medical-grade sunscreen option is right for you, hence why you can only purchase these products under the recommendation of a licensed medical professional. Unsure about your skin type or which sunscreen will best suit your skin? Schedule a consultation with one of Ivy’s licensed medical aestheticians to find out!

If you’ve been into Ivy recently, you may have noticed some new products on the shelves. The ISDIN line is the newest addition to the wide range of products available at Ivy. ISDIN products are 100% mineral sunscreens that offer broad spectrum protection. They use a revolutionary blend of peptides, antioxidants, and DNA Repairsomes to repair existing sun damage and reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles while preventing new ones. Their formulas are lightweight, blending seamlessly into the skin, and are recommended for all skin types.

No matter your age, skin type, or ethnicity, using sunscreen is essential to not only preventing aging caused by sun exposure, but also skin cancer prevention. Of course, the best kind of prevention is to lessen your exposure to the sun, but with weather this nice, who wants to be inside? Just make sure to apply sunscreen before going outside and remember to reapply after going in water or sweating excessively. If you need a sunscreen recommendation, Ivy Spa & Wellness has you covered!

Welcome to the Ivy Edge- your new go-to for the latest in medical aesthetics. We’ve been planning to start our blog for a while now and are happy to say it’s finally here!

Introducing you to the Edge provides us the opportunity to reintroduce ourselves and what Ivy Spa& Wellness is all about. Founded by Veronica Sanders MSN, APRN in 2011, Ivy Spa & Wellness is invested in the concept of treating beauty concerns from the inside out. We believe that health and beauty are all-encompassing; beauty on a surface level is not our sole focus but instead, we acknowledge that a person’s overall health is going to affect the way they age. Because of this concept, Veronica’s consultations are extensive and thorough, allowing her to gain an understanding of all factors affecting a client’s aging process. She can then conceive the most effective regimen for each individual client, making our clients’ treatment plans completely customized.

Operating under both the ‘medical aesthetic’ and ‘wellness’ umbrellas allows us to offer an extensive variety of services including:

-Facials
-Injectables i.e. neurotoxins, filler, thread lifts
-Permanent cosmetics
-Laser therapy
-Cryotherapy
-Light therapy
-IV Hydration treatments
-Body treatments
-Waxing and brow services
-Sexual Wellness treatments
-Vaginal Rejuvenation
-Makeup lessons and application

And more!

No matter where you are in your journey with medical aesthetics and anti-aging, Ivy Spa &Wellness has a treatment you can benefit from.

In addition to cutting edge medical aesthetic treatments, we carry exclusively medical grade skincare products. We are firm believers that medical grade skincare should work in conjunction to our treatments in order to achieve maximum results and all products are recommended by either Veronica or one of our two medical aestheticians, Crystal Thomas Fletcher, LME and Mya Johnson, LME. Additionally, all of our facial services include the use of medical grade products. We truly believe in the difference the right products can make in your skin’s health and we invite you to let us show you!

Before we wrap up this introduction to our first post for the Edge, you may be wondering why we chose to start a blog and who will be contributing to the content. We are current on other forms of social media but a blog allows us to:

E-ducate our clients about aesthetics
D-ialogue about our industry
G-room with an aesthetic eye and
E-levate your overall confidence and look to give you an EDGE

The world of medical aesthetics is ever-evolving and we realize it can be hard to keep up with the latest developments in the industry. For instance, you’re scrolling through Instagram and see a clip of your favorite influencer getting a new kind of facial. How does it work? Is it effective? Does Ivy offer the same service or something similar? These are the kinds of questions we hope to answer through the Edge.

As to our contributor, it made sense to bring in someone who is familiar with our business and our team. Tanner Moore has known Veronica since she first opened her practice in 2011 and has been an established client ever since. A writer since high school and English major in college, Tanner has worked in both the beauty and medical aesthetic industries and has achieved amazing results from the treatments Ivy Spa & Wellness has to offer. She’ll be bringing you a variety of exciting content that you won’t want to miss!

As we mentioned previously, the industry is always changing and you have to evolve with it in order to stay current. The Edge will allow us to keep our clients up to date and informed on the latest discoveries and trends in the industry, new services we choose to offer, upcoming events, as well as product and service highlights from our current menu. This feature is just another way for us to make ourselves available to our clients who we value so much. The Edge is for you and we hope you enjoy it!
